Hello Joe, it’s God Calling…

Cell phone ringing –  hello… who’s there?

Hello Joe, it’s God calling.

What?….. OK, who is this ….?

Sam is that you playing another one of your ‘gotcha!’ jokes?

No Joe… it’s really God calling.

Silence. 

Ah…well if that’s true…why are you calling me – of all people…what have I done..?

You’ve done nothing wrong Joe…it’s because I believe in you, and need your help.

You need my help..??

That’s right Joe; I need your help with something very important.

OK wait.  I know what this is… I’m asleep dreaming …and my alarm will go off any minute and I’ll wake up and realize that I just had a strange dream … So if I’m dreaming… maybe I can will myself awake ...

No Joe, you’re not dreaming…

Wow, you knew what I was just thinking?…well, (flustered), I still don’t understand…

It’s OK Joe, I’ll explain.

You’re probably aware that things aren’t going to well down there, and that your fellow man and the planet as a whole could use some help.

Boy, that’s for sure!  But what have I..  I mean, I thought that was your territory. Forgive me – but you are, after all…God.

That’s right Joe. But I wouldn’t be doing my job, if I didn’t help man learn how to help himself.  Plus take a little more responsibility for his fellows by trying to make things a bit better; whether for family, community or the world.

Remember when I said that I ‘believed in you’ ?

Yes…

Well I know that in your heart you’d like to do a little more…contribute in some way to help make a better world.  Is that right ?

Well yes it is…but – as they say – I’m just one person, and it seems to me there’s an awful lot to do.  And there’s so much trouble in the world that it’s almost overwhelming at times to even think about…

I know Joe, and you’re right. It is a big job and there is a lot to do.

So that’s why I’m coming to all those who care…those who want to see something done about it. Who instinctively feel there must be a way to change the course the planet is on, and lift man out of the darkness currently surrounding him.

Yes, I actually do feel that way too… and if there was way to do what you said and help mankind with his troubles before he does himself in… you know, before things become worse than they already are…boy I’d hop on that train real fast!

But then again…and I mean this with all due respect… it all seems so complicated and involved – and gosh I’m not some genius with a lot of money or time to give….and I do have to work. And this seems like something that ought to be tackled by people who have the resources and time to do justice by it. You know, be able to do something significant.

Well there’s truth in that Joe. But I wanted you to know that some of the greatest moments for mankind have been achieved in quieter, smaller ways too. And this doesn’t discount all the good that’s done by those who donate their time or resources in larger ways.  For where the intentions and actions are good…so is the help. So yes, there are some who have the time to be involved on a larger level, and this is very helpful.

But that’s only ‘some’ Joe.  And we’re looking at a planet of billions, and a job – as you indicated-  that is a big one, one that needs help from more than just a few.

It needs everyone of  like mind; those who see the all the violence, lies, disregard for human life and dignity, those that see the perversion of truth, injustice, antipathy for family or country, and see a very hardened cynicism. They see all of this …and just want to see ‘humankind’ be a little more human and a little more kind.

Slight mist coming into Joe’s eyes … If it were only…I mean there’s so much darkness in the world God…

I know Joe. But there is a way to help obliterate the darkness…and it doesn’t cost anything but a few moments of time and a desire to help. For when each person helps another in some way, or does something constructive that contributes to the greater good, they are making a difference.  And they’re also setting an example for others with their help.

By helping another to wake-up from their dream sleep of apathy, or to help someone to understand themselves or the world they live-in a little bit better, or when they bring truth instead of furthering a lie, or do the smallest thing like stopping to interact with a child in a positive way, help an older person with kindness, cheer a friend when they need it most, or just gives a smile to brighten someone’s day…

All these simple things Joe…do matter, more than you know…and are helping to make a better world… as they are bringing a moment of light to someones life.

As a famous theologian once said, ” it is better to light one candle than to curse the darkness…”

And those moments of light (and the clarity they bring), can also help another understand something previously misunderstood, and this has value beyond words.   For that understanding breeds more understanding, and exponentially grows.  So when we illuminate things so they are better understood, we are not only not only helping  one person – but many.

Joe brightening – so they don’t have to be big steps then…

No they don’t Joe… illuminating truth is not complicated, as the real truths are simple and universal…and usually represent values that others instinctively believe in.

These are merely examples of not only showing others there is a light at the end of the tunnel …but that ‘help’ is light.  

And light – like sunshine – is what the world needs more of,  if we want to bring clarity to people and help them discover how they can bring more of their own light to the world.  As a little light shared..begets more light.

A sigh…

Well I’m a little awed by what all you’ve said…I mean it’s wonderful.  And it makes so much sense. I’m just not quite sure where to start…

It’s easy Joe.  Like a light bulb…

just turn on your light.
